Living Well And Reducing Toxins In A Toxin Filled World

We attended a talk recently about staying healthy in a toxic world given by Dr. Tamara Sachs. This is a post inspired by that talk and what we’ve learned since we started this crazy journey to living more sustainably and green. This is a multi-part series of posts where we will share how we are reducing toxins in the food we eat and in the products we use in our home and on our skin. Lastly, we’ll share simple lifestyle tips for helping your body to properly detox. Join us as we navigate living well and vibrantly while reducing toxins in a toxin filled world!

Toxins Are Everywhere

The main take away from Dr. Sachs was that toxins are in fact everywhere – the air we breathe, the water we drink, the products we use, the foods we eat…the list goes on and on. And while this is frightening if you let it be, I found it incredibly empowering because there are practical ways for reducing toxins we come in contact with and the effects they have on us.

Some things you cannot escape – the air for instance. We all have to breathe. Yes, you can choose to live somewhere with cleaner air and less pollution, but regardless there will be pollutants in the air to some degree. For these things, I do my best but try not to hyper-focus on them because they are out of our control.

We know bad stuff, toxic stuff, is everywhere and it is on us to take charge of our health. That makes me feel empowered, like I have a say in the matter. There are some ways we can actively take steps toward reducing toxins and creating a healthier environment. But why should you care? And where do you start?! Let’s dive in!

Why You Should Care About Reducing Toxins

The second main take away from the recent talk we attended, given by Dr. Sachs, was that our toxin exposure has increased a ton over the last few decades, and it is only expected to continue to go up. Given this and the relatively short amount of time that it’s been since toxins have really started to negatively impact people’s lives, nobody really knows the extent to which toxins are wreaking havoc. All signs point to no good though.

Do you have symptoms of fatigue, brain fog, headaches, nausea, digestive issues, etc? While these can be symptoms of a number of ailments, it would be wise to consider toxicity. You should also consider making some targeted changes to your lifestyle, and see if you notice a difference in your overall health and wellness.

Reducing Toxins In Your Own Life

There are three main categories where you can reduce your exposure to toxins:

So What’s Next?

In the next three posts in this series, we will delve into simple and practical ways for reducing toxin exposure in the categories listed above. Start thinking about where you might be exposing yourself to toxins, and how you could minimize them in your day-to-day life.

Some thoughts…Have you started cleaning up you diet and the foods you put in your body? It’s a great start! What about the products you use around your home (think cleaners, soaps, detergents) and on your skin (think make-up, lotions, sunscreens, cleansers, hair products)? How much sleep do you get? There’s lots to consider!
